Laura A. Talbot, PhD, EdD, RN, is the Dean and Ruth Neil Murray Endowed Chair in Nursing in the College of Nursing at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center (UTHSC). Dr. Talbot has extensive administrative, clinical and research experience. Her research interest focus is on nurse managed rehabilitation programs which include physical activity and muscle strengthening to overcome disability with an emphasis in military populations. Dr. Talbot assumed her responsibilities as Dean at UTHSC in June 2012.
Originally from Texas, Dr. Talbot received her undergraduate education at Incarnate Word College School of Nursing in San Antonio. She obtained graduate degrees from California State University in Los Angeles, the University of North Texas in Denton, and Texas Women’s University in Denton, focusing on college teaching, studies in aging and nursing. Her postdoctoral work was performed at the Gerontology Research Center and sponsored by the National Institute of Nursing Research and National Institute on Aging, parts of the National Institutes of Health. She has previously been on the faculty at Texas Christian University, Johns Hopkins University, Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences, and the University of North Carolina, Charlotte. She is retired from Air Force with over 30 years of service in Reserve and Active Duty status. She lives in Memphis with her husband, Dr. Jeff Metter, and cocker spaniel, Allie. They have 5 children, 3 grandchildren and 1 grand dog. Her major interests are running, traveling and family.
