Donna Hathaway received her baccalaureate and master’s degrees in nursing from the University of Missouri-Columbia and her PhD in nursing from the University of Texas at Austin. During her career she has held a variety of clinical positions working primarily in post surgical units and has taught in all levels of nursing schools.

She joined the University Of Tennessee College Of Nursing in 1984 as Assistant Professor and subsequently was promoted to Associate Professor and to the rank of Professor. During this time she was also appointed as a Professor of Transplant Surgery in the College of Medicine where she held a position as Director of Clinical Transplant Research. She has also served as Director of the PhD program and as Dean from 2000 to August 2011 at which time she resumed a faculty position in the Acute and Chronic Care department and assumed the role of principal investigator for the funded research and clinical interests targeted at genetic/genomic and environmental components associated with outcomes of organ transplantation.

Her research, which examines quality of life and biobehavioral outcomes following organ transplantation, has been funded since the late 1980’s and is widely published in professional journals. As part of this program of research, Dr. Hathaway has been the sponsor of several K-awards and minority supplements. In addition, she has mentored numerous pre- and post-doctoral nurses, as well as pre- and post-doctoral transplant research fellows.

She has held positions in a variety of professional organizations including elected positions on the board of the International Transplant Nurses Society, as President of the Southern Nursing Research Society, on the charter Governing Board of the Institute for Healthcare Improvement Health Professions Education Council, and a member of the Board of Directors of the American Association of Colleges of Nursing. She is a fellow in the American Academy of Nursing, a Robert Wood Johnson Executive Nurse Fellow alumnus, has served on several NIH review panels, and frequently serves as a consultant to government, industry, and educational institutions.

Dr. Hathaway is well-known for her leadership and advocacy in creating innovational nursing education programs, building interprofessional experiences for students and faculty, and incorporating principles of quality improvement and patient safety in health professions education.
