Dr. Carol Thompson received her BSN from Florida State University, MS from the University of Maryland, PhD from Case Western Reserve University, and DNP from the University Tennessee Health Science Center. She has been a nursing faculty member at UTHSC since 1988, and presently is a tenured Professor of Critical and Acute Care Nursing. Her clinical practice is as an Acute Care Nurse Practitioner in the Emergency Department at Methodist University. Her research focus has been dyspnea in mechanically ventilated adults, procedural pain, and simulation. She has been a critical care nurse for 35 years and is certified as an Acute Care Nurse Practitioner and Family Nurse Practitioner. She is a Fellow of the Academy of Nurse Practitioners and a Fellow of Critical Care Medicine.
She is the Option Coordinator for Acute Care Nursing and teaches DNP and PhD students. She has received excellence in teaching awards. She has served on the Board for the American Association of Critical Care Nursing. She presently is on the Tennessee Board of Nursing and Secretary for the Society of Critical Care Medicine. She is an NIH Fellow in Genetics.
