Dr. Cheryl Cummings Stegbauer is a Professor in the College of Nursing at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center, Memphis. Stegbauer earned her bachelor's and PhD degrees from UT's Health Science Center and her master's degree from Texas Woman's University, Houston. She received the College of Nursing Alumni Association Outstanding Alumna Award in 1995 and the Most Supportive Alumna Award in 1999. She received the University of Tennessee National Alumni Association Outstanding Teacher Award in 2002 and the Public Service Award in 2004. Stegbauer first joined the faculty of UTHSC in 1976 as one of the original faculty members of the College of Nursing Family Nurse Practitioner graduate program. She has served both in the Faculty senate, on the Faculty Senate Executive Committee, and the Senate Faculty Affairs Committee. She was awarded two Presidential Citations for leadership in senate activities. As a senator, she served as a Faculty Counselor to former UT President, Ed Boling. She received the UT Student Government Excellence in Teaching Award in 1998 and 2002.
Dr. Stegbauer holds national board certification as a Family Nurse Practitioner and has practiced in this role for over 30 years. During this time, she has been active at both state and national levels with professional groups concerned with the legal and collaborative aspects of practice. She was an invited participant in the 2000 Annapolis Nurse Practitioner Think-Tank and is a member of the Board of Directors of the National Nurse Practitioner PR Campaign. She received the 2000 Outstanding Advanced Practice Nurse Award from the Tennessee Nurses Association. She was appointed to the Tennessee Board of Nursing in 2002 and served as Chair from 2004-2012. Dr. Stegbauer is a Fellow in the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners. Her faculty teaching role in the UT College of Nursing includes teaching Philosophy of Science for DNP and PhD students as well as advisor and faculty for DNP doctoral students.
