Cynthia K. Russell is a Professor of Nursing in the University of Tennessee Health Science Center College of Nursing. She has been with the College of Nursing since June 1993. She received her PhD in Nursing from the University of Arizona, her MSN with a Community Health/Adult Nurse Practitioner focus from West Virginia University, her BSN from Ohio University, and her diploma in nursing from Holzer Medical Center School of Nursing.
Dr. Russell's teaching has been across all the college's degree programs, focusing on healthcare informatics, program evaluation, and integrating qualitative research methods in evidence-based health care. She works with students in the areas of information literacy, information technology literacy, program evaluation, self-care decision making, gerontology, the chronic illness experience, qualitative research methods, and patient safety / organizational learning from error. In recognition of her teaching, she received a Student Government Association Teaching Award and was one of only three nursing faculty selected to the campus Academy of Distinguished Teaching Professors.
Dr. Russell has a longstanding interest in using technology in ways to obtain positive outcomes, whether in educational or clinical environments, with individuals or groups. For her development of an innovative Virtual Primary Care Clinic, she was selected as a winner for Best of Show in Innovations for Online Health Practice Education for Robert Wood Johnson's Partnerships for Training. Dr. Russell recently led a team of Health Science Center faculty and students in obtaining funding for a 3-year project focused on improving the information technology and information literacy competencies of students and professional nurses.
Dr. Russell is the Vice President of the Southern Nursing Research Society and has held leadership positions in Beta Theta-Chapter-at-Large Sigma Theta Tau and the Tennessee Nurses Association's Informatics Council. She is a campus leader for information technology issues, chairing the campus Computing and Telecommunications Committee from 1999-2004 and has received the Faculty Senator of the Year, two Presidential Citations, and an Exceptional Meritorious Achievement Award. She represents the campus on the University of Tennessee system-wide Educational Technology Collaborative.
