Michael Carter obtained his bachelor's and master's degrees in nursing from the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences in Little Rock, Arkansas. His Doctor of Nursing Science degree is from Boston University. He holds national certification as a Family Nurse Practitioner and as a Geriatric Nurse Practitioner is a Fellow in the American Academy of Nursing and a Distinguished Practitioner in the National Academies of Practice. He completed a Fellowship in Primary Care Health Policy the United States Public Health Service, the post-masters Geriatric Nurse Practitioner Program in 2007 and the Doctor of Nursing Practice in 2009.
Dr. Carter has held a variety of clinical, administrative and academic positions. From 1982 until 2000, he served as Dean and Professor at the College of Nursing, University of Tennessee Health Science Center where he is currently a University Distinguished Professor. He is a Family Nurse Practitioner for the Christian Health Center, Southridge Nursing and Rehabilitation Center and Southridge Village Retirement Center (Medical Director) in Heber Springs, Arkansas.
Dr Carter teaches courses in Philosophy of Science, Pathology, Professional Role Development and Leadership & Health Policy. He is a member of Sigma Theta Tau, The American Association of Colleges of Nursing, the American & Arkansas Nurses Association, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the American College of Rheumatology, the National Organization of Nurse Practitioner Faculties and the Society of Primary Care Policy Fellows.
