I have been an instructor with the university for five years now. While I have a degree in family practice, my focus is in women’s health. I am currently completing my doctor of nursing practice with a focus on vulvovaginal diseases and female cancers. Until now, I have worked in a private obstetric and gynecology practice one day per week, however, after graduation I will be joining an oncology gynecology clinic one day per week. The rest of my time is spent teaching.
I am lead faculty in Health Assessment and help teach Reproductive Health. I also take students into the clinical settings for Introduction into Professional Practice, Adult Health and Reproductive Health. For me, teaching the students to go above the simple task of memorizing facts to the analysis and application of the theory that they are learning is what sound education in nursing is all about. To do this, I believe in teaching by the Socratic Method. That is, I ask a lot of questions. I do not expect students to know all of the answers, so when they do not know the answer, I ask another question trying to get them to think through to the answer. Thinking through problems is what nurses do every day and I believe that this method helps them hone those skills.
I have served as Membership Ambassador, Successions Committee Member, and have been elected as Vice President of the Beta Theta Chapter of Sigma Theta Tau International Nursing Honor Society. I am also a member of the American Academy of Colleges of Nursing, the American Society of Colposcopy and Cervical Pathology, and different genealogical societies.
In addition to my teaching and practice responsibilities, I have developed a game that that presents students with an almost infinite number of patient scenarios and problems that must be solved in a competitive but non-threatening manner. Playing the game stimulates critical-thinking that goes above and beyond the usual discussion of case studies. Students tell me that they really enjoy playing and that the game does stimulate their critical-thinking. I have been awarded a grant to further develop and promote this game.
