Memphis, Tenn. (September 6, 2007) – Effective on August 20, Kenneth M. Peterson was appointed director of Purchasing for the University of Tennessee Health Science Center (UTHSC).  He has administrative responsibility for the Purchasing Services office, which provides the Health Science Center with procurement and related support services, including surplus property management.  Peterson reports to Steve Rowland, assistant vice chancellor for Business.

Prior to joining UTHSC, Peterson was a career employee of the U.S. government.  He brings more than 33 years of procurement and contract management experience to his current role.  His previous position was director of the National Acquisition Center for the Customs and Border Protection Service in the Department of Homeland Security.

“We are fortunate to have someone with Ken’s background to lead the Purchasing Services office,” said Rowland.  “His procurement leadership experience will serve us well as we seek to enhance services provided to the campus community.”

Peterson holds a Bachelor’s in history from Morehead State University in Kentucky and a Master of Science in Management from Indiana Wesleyan University.  He is a Distinguished Military Graduate from Army R.O.T.C. and attained the rank of Captain in the U.S. Army Quartermaster Corps.

After retiring from federal employment, Peterson took time to travel, learned to ride a motorcycle and wrote a book based on his travels, titled, “Bureaucrat to Tramp – a Freighter Cruise Adventure.”

As the flagship statewide academic health system, the University of Tennessee Health Science Center is focused on a four-tier mission of education, research, clinical care and public service, all in support of a single goal: to improve the health of Tennesseans.  Offering a broad range of postgraduate training opportunities, the main campus, which includes six colleges, is located in Memphis.  UTHSC has additional College of Medicine and College of Pharmacy campuses in Knoxville and a College of Medicine campus in Chattanooga.  For more information, visit www.uthsc.edu.
