(November 15, 2010) – Founded in 1911 at the heart of what is now the Memphis
Medical Center, the University of Tennessee Health Science Center (UTHSC) is
rapidly approaching its centennial anniversary year
-- 2011. Since its founding,
UTHSC has educated and trained more than 53,000 health care professionals on
campuses and in health care facilities across the state. UTHSC
and its affiliated teaching hospitals provide more than one million days of

To commemorate its
historic first century, the university is planning a variety of special
activities including a lecture series, Web site, commemorative book, 5-K
run/walk, and a celebratory gala on the Memphis campus, which is set for Saturday,
September 17, 2011.
In early December
2010, the centennial book titled -- The Legacy The Future: A Centennial
Portrait of The University of Tennessee Health Science Center -- will
arrive in the UTHSC Bookstore located at 930 Madison Avenue (plaza level) in
Memphis.
“The centennial
book is a well-photographed and meticulously written snapshot of our past and
present as well as a glimpse of our future,” said UTHSC Chancellor Steve
Schwab, MD. “Brief, thoughtfully crafted
essays offer the reader a clear understanding of the milieu in which the Health
Science Center was formed and insight into the expansion of each of our
colleges. Coupled with the crisp,
insightful text are vivid, engrossing photographs that draw the reader into our
story and provide an overview of the impact and importance of our statewide
academic institution.”
The UTHSC
centennial book can also be purchased online through the university bookstore
Web site – http://www.uthsc.bncollege.com. The
beautifully photographed, oversized coffee table book is priced at $60, but the
