____________________________________________________

Memphis, Tenn. (November 8, 2006) -- Stephan L. Foster, PharmD, associate professor of Clinical Pharmacy at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center (UTHSC), has been appointed chair of the Cervical Cancer Elimination Subcommittee of the Tennessee Comprehensive Cancer Control Coalition.  The subcommittee was established by an act of the Tennessee General Assembly during the last session to decrease the incidence of cervical cancer across the state.  Dr. Foster was chosen from a list of 17 nominees by the Commissioner of Health, Dr. Kenneth S. Robinson.

The only pharmacist on the subcommittee, Dr. Foster’s group will include physicians from Meharry Medical College, Vanderbilt University, East Tennessee State University, American College of Gynecology, American Association of Family Practice, and the Tennessee Department of Health.  Other subcommittee members include representatives from the American Cancer Society, the Deputy Commissioner of Health, as well as a state representative and a state senator.

Dr. Foster is vice chair of the Department of Clinical Pharmacy and serves as director of the Office of Community Health and the Community Pharmacy Residency Program at the UTHSC College of Pharmacy.

As the flagship statewide academic health system, the University of Tennessee Health Science Center is focused on a four-tier mission of education, research, patient care and community service, all in support of a single goal: to improve the health of Tennesseans.  Offering a broad range of postgraduate training opportunities, the main campus, which includes six colleges, is located in Memphis.  UTHSC has additional College of Medicine campus locations in Knoxville and Chattanooga.  For more information, visit www.uthsc.edu.
