Memphis, Tenn. (May 4, 2012) – On Friday, May 25, the University of Tennessee Health Science Center (UTHSC) will graduate 733 health care professionals.  The commencement ceremony will be held at 1:30 p.m. in FedEx Forum, 191 Beale Street.  UTHSC Chancellor Steve J. Schwab, MD, will preside over the ceremony.  UT System President Joe DiPietro will confer the degrees and give the charge to the graduates.

The 733 graduates are from all six of the UT Health Science Center’s colleges.

n      201 from the College of Allied Health Sciences;

n      76 from the College of Dentistry;

n      37 from the College of Graduate Health Sciences;

n      148 from the College of Medicine;

n      95 from the College of Nursing;

n      176 from the College of Pharmacy.

This year’s graduating class includes 101 African-Americans, 9 Latino-Americans, 114 members from small or rural Tennessee communities, and 183 graduates who came from out of state to study at UTHSC.  In addition, this graduating class comprises 278 men and 455 women.  Some 17 of the out-of-state graduates are Arkansans who earned their doctoral degrees from the UT College of Dentistry.  Arkansas students come to Tennessee to train as dentists because their state has no dental college.

As the flagship statewide academic health system, the mission of the University of Tennessee Health Science Center (UTHSC) is to bring the benefits of the health sciences to the achievement and maintenance of human health, with a focus on the citizens of Tennessee and the region, by pursuing an integrated program of education, research, clinical care, and public service.  In 2011, UT Health Science Center celebrated its centennial: 100 years advancing the future of health care.  Offering a broad range of postgraduate training opportunities, the main UTHSC campus is located in Memphis and includes six colleges: Allied Health Sciences, Dentistry, Graduate Health Sciences, Medicine, Nursing and Pharmacy.  The UTHSC campus in Knoxville includes a College of Medicine, College of Pharmacy, and an Allied Health Sciences unit.  In addition, the UTHSC Chattanooga campus includes a College of Medicine and an Allied Health Sciences unit.  Since its founding in 1911, UTHSC has educated and trained more than 53,000 health care professionals on campuses and in health care facilities across the state.  For more information, visit www.uthsc.edu.
