Memphis, Tenn. (May 10, 2007) — The University of Tennessee Health Science Center (UTHSC) International Society for Pharmacoeconomics and Outcomes Research (ISPOR) Student Chapter was selected as the Outstanding ISPOR Student Chapter of the Year for 2006-2007.  This is the first award given since this distinguished service award was instituted to recognize ISPOR Student Chapters providing exemplary service to their university, community and ISPOR.

The UTHSC ISPOR Student Chapter has been active in the Memphis community and within the student network.  The chapter worked with the Shelby County Government in their Medicare Mates Program to help senior citizens navigate the Medicare Prescription Drug Benefit Program.

The award, consisting of a plaque and a check for $500 to be used to support the activities of the student chapter, will be presented at the ISPOR Students’ Leadership Retreat on May 20, in Arlington, Va.  Accepting the honor will be Joyce Addo-Atuah, PhD candidate in the Health Science Administration graduate program and the current president of the UTHSC ISPOR Student Chapter.

ISPOR provides a forum for engaging international researchers from academia, pharmaceutical industry, government, managed care, health research organizations, and purchasers of health care in the science of pharmacoeconomics and health outcomes research.  The mission of ISPOR is to translate pharmacoeconomics and outcomes research into practice to ensure that society allocates scarce health care resources wisely, fairly and efficiently.

As the flagship statewide academic health system, the University of Tennessee Health Science Center is focused on a four-tier mission of education, research, clinical care and public service, all in support of a single goal: to improve the health of Tennesseans.  Offering a broad range of postgraduate training opportunities, the main campus, with its six colleges, is in Memphis.  UTHSC has additional College of Medicine campus locations in Knoxville and Chattanooga.  For more information, visit www.uthsc.edu.
