College of Nursing at

of Tennessee Health Science Center

National Search to Begin for New Dean

Memphis, Tenn. (May
19, 2011) – Steve J. Schwab, chancellor for the University of Tennessee Health
Science Center (UTHSC), announced that Donna Hathaway, PhD, FAAN, dean for the
UTHSC College of Nursing, desires to step down from the dean’s role on August 1
and will return to a faculty position.
Dean Hathaway has been with the UT College of Nursing since 1984, and August
1, 2011, will be her 11-year anniversary as dean of the College of Nursing. Susan Jacob, PhD, RN, executive associate
dean for the college, who has been with UTHSC since 2003 and has extensive
experience in nursing and administration, will serve as interim dean from
August 1 until a permanent successor is named.
“Dean Hathaway has
done a remarkable job of serving her college for the past 11 years,” Chancellor
Schwab said. “Her vitality, skills at
building and maintaining strong relationships, and commitment to moving the
college forward have kept our College of Nursing on the leading edge of the
discipline. We are grateful for her many
accomplishments and look forward to her additional contributions as she
continues her role as a faculty member.”
The national search
for the new dean of the UTHSC College of Nursing will begin soon. Ken Brown, JD, MPA, PhD, UTHSC executive
vice chancellor and chief operations officer, and David M. Stern, MD, executive
dean for the UTHSC College of Medicine, will co-chair the search committee. Spencer Stuart executive search has been
retained as the search firm.
