UTHSC College of Pharmacy Students Establish Garrett Scholarship
Memphis, Tenn. (June 20, 2006)—Students at The University of Tennessee Health Science Center (UTHSC) College of Pharmacy have established a scholarship endowment in the name of Melinda Garrett.
Garrett, 23, a first-year pharmacy student at the UTHSC College of Pharmacy, died suddenly on March 28 following a brief illness. She was pursuing a Doctor of Pharmacy degree at UTHSC and was a member of Kappa Psi, a professional pharmacy fraternity, and the Academy of Student Pharmacists Executive Committee.
Born December 1, 1982, to Dale and Fay Garrett of McKenzie, Tenn., Garrett was a 2001 graduate of McKenzie High School, where she was an honor student and a member of the cheerleading squad. She graduated from the University of Tennessee at Martin (UTM), where she was a member of Alpha Delta Pi Sorority. While an undergraduate student, she was a University Scholar and president of the Panhellenic Council, as well as a member of both the homecoming court and the Miss UTM royalty.
“Melinda’s beautiful smile, genuine laugh and sense of humor will be preserved in her fellow students’ hearts and thoughts,” said Lauren Webb of Huntingdon, Tenn., 2005-06 president of the UTHSC chapter of the Academy of Student Pharmacists.
As the flagship statewide academic health system, the University of Tennessee Health Science Center is focused on a four-tier mission of education, research, patient care and community service, all in support of a single goal: to improve the health of Tennesseans. Offering a broad range of post-graduate training opportunities, the main campus, with its seven colleges, is in Memphis. UTHSC has additional College of Medicine campus locations in Knoxville and Chattanooga. For more information, visit www.uthsc.edu.
