Memphis, Tenn. (December 2, 2008) – On the Tuesday before Thanksgiving, staff members from the University of Tennessee Health Science Center (UTHSC) delivered 2,631 pounds of food and household supplies to Mid-South Food Bank.

“Community donations of wholesome food and other grocery items are critical to our mission,” stated Susan Sanford, president and CEO of Mid-South Food Bank.  “The generous efforts of the UT Health Science Center team members equated to 1,865 meals that benefited our neighbors in need,” she added.

Serving 312 charitable feeding programs in 31 Mid-South counties, Mid-South Food Bank fights hunger by efficiently collecting and distributing wholesome food, while educating the community about the problem of hunger and advocating on behalf of hungry people.

“Everyone who helped with the Campus Food Drive made it a great success,” said Malrie Shelton, LCSW, director of Public Service for UT Health Science Center, who organized the food drive on the sprawling campus.  With almost 40 buildings, nearly 2 million square feet of space and a group of 4,000 team members (faculty, students and staff), the UT Health Science Center’s main campus is situated in the heart of the Memphis Medical Center, not far from the food bank.

As the flagship statewide academic health system, the University of Tennessee Health Science Center is focused on a four-tier mission of education, research, clinical care and public service, all in support of a single goal: to improve the health of Tennesseans.  Offering a broad range of postgraduate training opportunities, the main campus is located in Memphis and includes six colleges: Allied Health Sciences, Dentistry, Graduate Health Sciences, Medicine, Nursing and Pharmacy.  UTHSC has additional College of Medicine and College of Pharmacy campuses in Knoxville, and a College of Medicine campus in Chattanooga.  For more information, visit www.uthsc.edu.
