Memphis, Tenn. (August 24, 2009) – Steve J. Schwab, MD, executive dean of the College of Medicine for the University of Tennessee Health Science Center (UTHSC) has announced a leadership change in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology (OB/GYN) on the UTHSC Memphis campus.

Veronica Mallett, MD, will transition from the chair of OB/GYN to medical director of health care excellence for the Regional Medical Center at Memphis.  She will also serve as director of the UT, Tennessee Centering Pregnancy Program, a model multidisciplinary community-based mother- and-infant outcomes-improvement program.  Giancarlo Mari, MD, will assume the duties of OB/GYN chair effective immediately.   Dr. Mari is currently a professor and chief of the division of Maternal Fetal Medicine (MFM) and director of the Maternal Fetal Institute.

Dr. Mallett assumed the duties of OB/GYN chair in August 2005.  Prior to joining UTHSC, she served as program director of the Obstetrics and Gynecology Residency Program for the Oakwood Health System. Under her stewardship, the department received full accreditation for two training programs in minimally invasive surgery and maternal fetal medicine as well as a full four-year accreditation of the residency program.

“As I transition in my new role and embrace my passion for patient safety and providing exceptional care to the underserved in our community, please join me in congratulating Dr. Giancarlo Mari as he assumes his new duties,” Dr. Mallett said.

Dr. Mari, who joined UTHSC in 2008, received his medical degree from the University of Napoli and completed his residency in OB/GYN, as well as a fellowship in MFM, from Yale University.

“The college expresses its sincere thanks to Dr. Mallett for her past successes and looks forward to her continued contributions,” said Dr. Schwab.  “We look forward to the vision articulated by Dr. Mari for the growth and expansion of the department.”
