UT RESEARCHER FEATURED AT BIOTECH EVENT

Memphis, Tennessee (April 12, 2005) – Daniel Goldowitz, PhD, director of the UT Research Center of Excellence in Genomics and Bioinformatics at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center (UTHSC), is participating on a panel at Biofusion 2005, being held in Atlanta this week. Dr. Goldowitz will present the UTHSC perspective on a panel, “University-National Lab-Industry Partnership Opportunities,” which is part of the inaugural meeting of the southeastern biotech conference.

The event is designed to offer one-on-one partnering opportunities for bioscience companies and institutions from across the southeastern United States and the world.  Companies from Canada, Germany, Israel and the United Kingdom are expected to attend. Its purpose is to provide a venue that will help companies share and build on their mutual resources.

“Memphis has a tremendous biotech research and development story to tell, and this is a great opportunity to get the word out. UTHSC is the central component of the biomedical corridor, with the UT Cancer Institute, our Outreach program and the Tennessee Mouse Genome Consortium playing key roles,” said Dr. Goldowitz who is also Methodist Hospitals Foundation Professor in Neuroscience.

Mike Demster, vice president of Memphis BioWorks Development Council, commented, “It’s a feather in Memphis’ cap to have one of Memphis’ most respected members of the scientific community as our ambassador to BioFusion 2005.”

Demster noted that, “This event offers an opportunity to showcase Memphis as a premier location for biotech companies We offer world class basic research in virtually every area through the University of Tennessee Health Science Center, a strong patient base for clinical research and an abundance of biomedical companies, not to mention our unique worldwide distribution capabilities.”
