UTHSC Professor Baselski Receives Leadership Award

in Clinical Microbiology

Memphis, Tenn. (April 16, 2007) – Vickie S. Baselski, PhD, professor in the Department of Pathology, University of Tennessee Health Science Center, has received the bio-Mérieux Sonnenwirth Award for Leadership in Clinical Microbiology.  The award is given annually in memory of Alexander Sonnenwirth and supported by bio-Mérieux, Inc., a world leader in the field of in vitro diagnostics.

Dr. Baselski received her bachelor’s and doctorate degrees in microbiology from the University of Texas, Austin, and completed her postdoctoral fellowship in public health and medical laboratory microbiology at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Atlanta, Ga.

Throughout her long and productive career, she has been an advocate for the role of laboratory scientists in positions of responsibility in the field of clinical microbiology.  She has held numerous important positions in organizations, both regionally and nationally, that allowed her to work effectively toward enhancing the discipline of clinical microbiology. Dr. Baselski has become this country’s foremost authority with regard to reimbursement issues related to clinical microbiology and serves as a primary resource to laboratories and laboratorians across the country.

For much of Dr. Baselski’s academic career she served as technical director of Clinical Microbiology at the Regional Medical Center (The MED), Bowld Hospital, and at Memphis Pathology Laboratory (formerly Baptist Regional Laboratory).  Dr. Baselski currently serves as clinical microbiology consultant to both Memphis Pathology Laboratory and the Memphis and Shelby County Health Department Laboratory.

Dr. Baselski, a Fellow of the American Academy of Microbiology, received the S. E. Sulkin Award, presented by the Texas Branch of the American Society for Microbiology, and the William H. Ewing Award from the Southern Association for Clinical Microbiology.

As the flagship statewide academic health system, the University of Tennessee Health Science Center is focused on a four-tier mission of education, research, clinical care and public service, all in support of a single goal: to improve the health of Tennesseans.  Offering a broad range of postgraduate training opportunities, the main campus, which includes six colleges, is located in Memphis.  UTHSC has additional College of Medicine campus locations in Knoxville and Chattanooga.  For more information, visit www.uthsc.edu.
