Information Security Training

The 2017-18 Information Security Training is available online and is required for ALL UTHSC faculty, staff, and students to complete annually. This training was created to provide UTHSC community members with a solid understanding of the university's information security policies, procedures, and best practices as well as applicable government regulations and laws. It is our mission to increase your knowledge and awareness of potential security pitfalls, which in turn will reduce the risk to the university's computing and data resources and help prevent costly, reputation-damaging data breaches.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Information Security Training?

Information Security Training is a series of audiovisual modules, each followed by a three-question quiz. This training is designed to help our campus community understand their responsibilities in a variety of information security areas, such as protecting ePHI and other confidential data, awareness of phishing schemes, safeguarding passwords, and practicing general computing safety.

Why is this training required?

Per the University of Tennessee's policy IT-0123 on security awareness, training, and education, UTHSC is required to provide its users and IT personnel with role-based security training that is planned, implemented, maintained, and accompanied by evaluation.

Why am I not allowed access to the network until I take this training?

In order to make sure the entire campus community is trained, this restriction was approved by upper administration to assure compliance with the University of Tennessee's policy IT-0123 policy.

When can I take the training?

The 2017-18 UTHSC Information Security Training is available now. New employees must complete their training before network access is granted. New students should take the training during orientation. Current students and employees must complete the refresher training before the advertised deadline.

Where do I take the training?

The 2017-18 Information Security Training is located in UTHSC Blackboard. You are assigned either the new hire course or the refresher course based upon your hire date. Log in to Blackboard with your UTHSC NetID and password.

How do I take the training?

The training should be taken online. The manual below provide a visual and text-based guide to the training.

If you need or prefer face-to-face training, times for training will be posted at the bottom of this page. This training will be viewing the same audiovisual modules that are found in Blackboard, with an open discussion of the topic after each module.

American English is my second language, and it is sometimes hard for me to read and/or understand English. What should I do?

If you are unable to complete the training due to a language barrier, please contact the Information Security Coordinator at (901) 448-1579 or itsecurity@uthsc.edu.

I'm uncomfortable using a computer. What should I do?

If you need assistance on completing your training online, check with your supervisor for support, or contact the Information Security Coordinator at (901) 488-1579 for guidance. You can attend one of the face-to-face training sessions that will be scheduled before the deadline for refresher training.

I don't work with confidential data or patient information. Do I still have to take this training?

Yes. The information security training covers more than just the handling of sensitive/confidential data. It also teaches you the basics of secure computing, which will help reduce risk to UTHSC devices, accounts, and data (as well as to your personal items).

Can new employees and students who completed information security training at another UT institution get "credit" for that training?

Yes. If they can provide documented proof of that training, they will be exempt from the full training for that particular year. Please contact the Information Security office at 901-448-1579 to complete the exemption process.

Please note, however, that like everyone else, they will have to complete the refresher training during each subsequent year.

Can new employees and students who completed information security training at a non-UT institution get "credit" for that training?

No. UTHSC does not recognize training from non-UT institutions such as the VA or Methodist for example.

I have a disability and am unable to complete my training. What should I do?

The American Disabilities Act (ADA) protects qualified individuals with disabilities. An individual with a disability is a person who has a physical or mental impairment that substantially limits one or more major life activities; has a record of such an impairment; or is regarded as having such an impairment.

For assistance please contact the UTHSC Office of Equity and Diversity (OED) at (901) 448-2112 or oed@uthsc.edu or visit their Persons with Disabilities page.
