Affiliated Training Facilities

All fellows are assigned to a continuity care clinic at the VA or the West Cancer Center. Each first and second year fellow has a continuity clinic for one half day each week at the VA. Patients are longitudinal, managed care, post-hospital follow-ups, consultations, or walk-in primary care patients. First-hand knowledge is gained about managed health care. Each fellow has an extraordinary amount of patient contact. Second and Third year fellows will also have one half day clinic at West Clinic in addition to the VA clinic.

Founded in 1922, the Memphis VA Medical Center (VAMC) is affiliated with the University of Tennessee Health Science Center and is one of UTHSC's primary adult teaching hospitals.  It offers quality healthcare for the changing medical, surgical, and quality of life needs of the Mid-South men and women who so proudly served our nation.

For the 196,000 veterans from 53 counties in western Tennessee, northern Mississippi, and northwest Arkansas, the VAMC offers a variety of services for both physical and mental health needs.  New programs include those for traumatic brain injuries, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and suicide prevention.

Consultation services are offered. This is also one of the sites for continuity clinics throughout the full three years of fellowship. Fellows will have the opportunity to participate in state of the art multidisciplinary clinics and conferences offered at the VA. Fellows experience a vast variety of complex oncological and hematological cases during their consult months as well as in the clinic.

Consult Hematology/Oncology Service: Staffed by attending, fellow, and on occasion internal medicine residents. Full time oncology pharmacist also available. (PGY4-2 months; PGY5- 1 month)

Founded in 1979 by Dr. Bill West, today the West Cancer Center is one of the nation's premier oncology, hematology, and radiology centers. It has pioneering partnerships with both Methodist Healthcare and the University of Tennessee Health Science Center.  The West Cancer Center has 18 locations n the Mid-South with 100 physicians.  These locations see over 30,000 patients annually.

The West Cancer Center motto: “Fight On!”, speaks to their dedication to treating the whole person, not just the disease by providing the best care available to patients. 

Fellows participate in weekly clinical experiences with West Cancer Center staff during the second and third year of fellowship.

Regional One Health (ROH) was established in 1829, making it the oldest health system in Tennessee.  In addition to being the home of the Elvis Presley Trauma Center, Regional One Health also includes Centers of Excellence in Burn, High-Risk Obstetrics, and Neonatal Intensive Care (NICU).  

ROH is the largest medical and surgical teaching site for the University of Tennessee Health Science Center.  More than half of Tennessee's doctors will receive some, if not all, training at ROH.  The partnership between Regional One Health and the University of Tennessee Health Science Center includes the UT Regional One Physicians group, the largest teaching physician group of its kind in the Mid-South.

Methodist University Hospital (MUH) is a partnership of two healthcare leaders, Methodist Healthcare and the University of Tennessee Health Science Center (UTHSC). Located in the medical center and formerly known as Methodist Central, MUH is a 617-bed facility and the principal adult private teaching hospital for UTHSC. Methodist University Hospital provides real-world experiences of managing medical problems in an efficient and effective institution.

MUH and UTHSC bring together research, medicine, and innovation. This partnership supports multidisciplinary collaboration among doctors and clinical team members, leading to more advanced medical care for patients.

Inpatient services as well as consult services are available rotations. Methodist University Hospital houses the malignant hematology and bone marrow transplant services, inpatient services, as well as a private hematology oncology consult service. The fellows will also have the opportunity to participate in inpatient private service as well as a consult service to provide “real world” fellowship experience. All services are supported by full time oncology pharmacists, case managers, social workers, and nurses that help to enhance the educational opportunities for the fellows.

    • Inpatient Solid Tumor Oncology Service: Staffed by attending, fellow, pharmacist, and internal medicine resident. Allows fellows to explore the complexity of the hospitalized patients with solid tumors. (PGY4- 2 months; PGY5- 1 month
    • Malignant Hematology Service: Staffed by attending, and fellow. The fellow will gain knowledge of inpatient care of acute leukemia, aggressive lymphoma, and a variety of hematological illnesses. Multidisciplinary team approach is utilized, meeting twice monthly to discuss challenging cases. (PGY 4-2 months; PGY 5 1 month)
    • Bone Marrow Transplant Team: Staffed by attending, fellow, and pharmacist. The fellow will gain fundamental knowledge of inpatient care of bone marrow transplant patients. Again, a multidisciplinary team approach is utilized, meeting twice monthly to discuss challenging cases. (PGY 4-2 months; PGY 5 1 month)
    • Consult Hematology/Oncology Service: Staffed by attending, fellow, and many months an internal medicine resident. Team provides consultation on private patients for the Methodist University Hospital. Fellow will interact with multiple subspecialties and primary care doctors to help provide comprehensive cancer and hematology care. (PGY4- 1 month; PGY5-2 months; PGY6- 1 month).

Founded in 1962, Le Bonheur Children's Hospital is an integral part of the Methodist Healthcare Family and a training site for many University of Tennessee Health Science Center residents/fellows. Funded primarily through donations and federal grants, St. Jude sees approximately 7,800 patients from around the world.

Named one of the nation's "Best Children's Hospitals" by U.S. News & World Report, Le Bonheur is the only Level 1 pediatric trauma center in the Mid-South.  Its neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) provides the highest level of care for the region's critically ill newborns. In 2015, St. Jude is recognized for the fifth year in a row as one of Fortune magazine’s “100 Best Companies to Work For.” 

Fellows are provided the opportunity to attend clinic for St. Jude Life, which is an adult clinic for the evaluation of late effects of chemotherapy and radiation. Fellows also have the opportunity for electives as well as clinical and basic science research at this state of the art institution.
