Post-baccalaureate Certificate Option

The post-baccalaureate certificate in Health Informatics and Information Management option allows a working professional to add necessary knowledge to help the health care organization manage data better and support evidence-based, clinical decision making.

Two classes are accepted each year. The program will be offered in an on-line format to allow students to continue to work while in the program. The certificate option consists of nine graduate hours.

The post- baccalaureate certificate does not provide eligibility to write the RHIA examination of the American Health Information Management Association.

Post-baccalaureate certificate curriculum

Information Technology and Systems - HIM 600 – Broad coverage of technology concepts underlying modern computing and information management. Topics include computer networks, communications protocols, data architecture, Internet, basic computer security, database management, graphical user interfaces, client/server systems, and enterprise applications.

Healthcare Information Systems - HIM 605 – A survey of fundamental concepts of information technology applied to health care from the perspectives of providers, payers, consumers. Major topics include the electronic health record, health information systems, repositories and data bases, enterprise-wide systems, laboratory, radiology (PACs) systems, voice recognition, physician order entry, telemedicine, decision support systems. Overview of historical, current, and emerging health information systems; concepts and knowledge involved in making strategic use of information technology (IT) in health care organizations and linkages to business, planning, and governance; Overview of multiple systems, vendors, processes and organizations; methodology for evaluation of health information systems.

A third three hour course must be selected and approved by the program director.

Admission Requirements for the certificate option

Must have an accredited Baccalaureate degree in a health-related discipline.

The Entry-Level Masters program and the Post-graduate program are both accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Health Informatics and Information Management Education (CAHIIM). The entry-level program has excellent outcomes and results on the national certification examination are above the national average.
