Cytotechnology & Histotechnology - Master of Cytopathology Practice (MCP)
MCP students in the cytotechnology portion of the curriculum learn how to identify morphologic abnormalities in cells that may indicate cancer or pre-cancerous changes by analyzing specimens with an instructor at a 10-headed microscope
The mission of the UTHSC Program in Cytotechnology & histotechnology is to produce highly skilled, entry level cytotechnologists and histotechnologists able to meet the current demands of the profession and prepared to assume positions in education, research and management after appropriate clinical experience.
The Master of Cytopathology Practice (MCP) program is a professional entry-level master’s degree program that prepares graduates for certification in both cytotechnology and histotechnology. These are two separate but related laboratory professions within the division of anatomic pathology. This degree enables students to learn two distinct disciplines and become a highly skilled, cross trained individual with enhanced employment opportunities.

- Graduation Rate: The program has graduated 18 of 19 (95%) students admitted to the program for the last four graduating classes.
- Certification: All graduates (100%) have taken and passed the cytotechnologist (CT) certification examination for the last four graduating classes. Not all graduates choose to take the histotechnologist (HTL) certification examination. Nine of the 12 (75%) who have taken the examination for the last four graduating classes have passed. All graduates (5) took and passed the HTL examination in 2014.
- Employment: All (100%) graduates who sought employment for the last four graduating classes obtained employment in one or both of these professions.
