Along with Dr. Schwarz, colleagues and students, I explore behavioral links between oral and written language development, with a focus on co-morbid speech and language disorders. I am particularly interested in the area of written language (i.e., spelling) for those individuals who rely on the use of augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) and those who are hearing impaired. Our research is ultimately designed to create language and literacy assessments and interventions for young school age children.

Along with colleagues and students, I am exploring various components of reading comprehension with particular focus on vocabulary (basic concept acquisition), phonological awareness, and decoding (including spelling). This research is ultimately designed to create language and literacy assessments and interventions for young school age children. The investigations involve children with typical hearing and children who are deaf or hearing impaired. Studies initiated by doctoral students in my lab also include the cross-language transfer of phonological awareness skills with bilingual Korean-English speaking children, a developmental study of proverb understanding with Korean children and adults, and the importance of executive functions to narrative development for children who are deaf or hearing impaired.
