What is the Office 365 Clutter Feature?

What is Clutter?

Clutter is an email filtering option available to Office 365/Volmail users. The functionality is similar in concept to a junk mail filter. Clutter learns from your actions to determine the messages you are likely to ignore. As less important messages arrive, they are automatically moved to the Clutter folder. Clutter does this by leveraging Office Graph's sophisticated machine learning techniques to determine which messages are Clutter. It gets smarter over time, learning from your prior actions with similar messages, and assessing things like the type of content and even how you are addressed in the message. The Clutter experience is personalized to each individual and reflects an email experience that adapts to your actions and preferences without you having to do anything. The information Clutter learns from each user's actions are only applied to that user's experience and are not shared with anyone else.

Much of the mail that will end up going to the Clutter folder should be bulk mail (advertisements) or messages from mailing lists. However, it is recommended to periodically check the Clutter folder as it may move legitimate email.

How do I turn off Clutter?

Microsoft has decided to turn on Clutter by default. To disable Clutter, you will need to log into the Office 365 Outlook Web App (OWA), select the Mail app, select the Gear icon (for Settings) > Mail (under My App Settings) > Clutter (under Automatic Processing), then uncheck Separate items identified as Clutter then click Save.

How do I use Clutter?

If you have Clutter is enabled, you will want to keep an eye on your Clutter folder to make sure you're not missing anything important.

Office 365 Outlook Web App

To mark messages as "not clutter", either right click on the message and choose 'Mark as not clutter' or by dragging it to the Inbox. If messages you want marked as clutter are being missed, right-click the message and choose 'Mark as clutter' or drag it to the Clutter folder.

Outlook and other clients

You will need to drag a message to the clutter folder to mark it as "clutter", or drag it to the Inbox to mark it as "not clutter."

**Note: If you have rules moving messages, Clutter is applied after server-side rules are applied and items touched by rules won't be filtered by clutter.
