Community Education in Disabilities Seminar Series 2013

The Interdisciplinary Leadership Training seminars present state-of-the-art programs on interdisciplinary practice.

Topics

Topics address quality of life issues across the life span for persons with neurodevelopmental and related disabilities, children with special health care needs, and their families.

Focus

Sessions focus on current and future directions in family-centered prevention and intervention approaches for diverse populations and address collaboration at local, state, and national levels.

Who should attend

Healthcare, mental health and social service personnel, nurses, teachers, therapists, direct care staff, family members, speech-language pathologists, and individuals with disabilities should attend.

Registration Fee

Sessions are FREE however, advance registration is required for attendees. Students are highly encouraged to attend. There are fees associated with specific continuing education credit. See below for more details. View the Grievance Policy and Complaint Procedures for further information.

Place

All sessions will take place at the Boling Center, located at 711 Jefferson Avenue in Memphis. Web-conferencing is available upon request through Adobe Connect.

Remote Viewing

A request for a remote viewing site requires a 10-day advanced notice to verify compatibility of equipment. Preference will be given to sites with at least five (5) participants. Attendees will be able to view and participate in discussion and interact with presenters. *Please note that remote site participants must register for the session.

and LEND Programs

Speakers: Lynne Tomasa, AZ; Sue Fox, NH; Laura Robinson, NY; Anna Esbensen, OH; Judith Holt, CO; & Tera Yoder, VA

This webinar will feature 6 national AUCD Network programs with a specific focus on research, service and training regarding the topic of aging and disability. The webinar will include a facilitated panel of guests from Arizona, New Hampshire, New York, Ohio, Colorado, and Virginia

Incorporating Racial-Cultural Competence into Health Care Settings

This webinar will feature Dr. Sha’Kema Blackmon from the University of Memphis, College of Education, Health and Human Sciences. Dr. Blackmon received her Doctor of Philosophy in Counseling Psychology from Loyola University Chicago in 2010. Dr. Blackmon’s research interests focus on social justice and multicultural issues consisting of two tracks: the psychology of African Americans and the multicultural competence of health care professionals who serve people of color.

Education Across the Life Span: Secondary, Transition and Post-Secondary Education Initiatives

This webinar will highlight three innovative programs for advocacy and access to education for people with disabilities. Debra Vitale, LCSW will present her work with the innovative Special Education Parent Teacher Association chartered last year in Shelby County and the first in the state of Tennessee. Melvin L. Jackson and Crystal Godwin from University of Tennessee Center for Literacy, Education and Employment will present the transition and self-determination project and Maurice Williams, MA from the University of Memphis will discuss the highlights from the first semester of Tiger LIFE, a post-secondary program for people with intellectual disabilities.

The Interdisciplinary Leadership Training (ILT) Ethics seminars present topics addressing medical and behavioral issues for children with special health care needs and adults with neurodevelopmental and related disabilities across the life span. Sessions focus on current and future directions in family-centered care, intervention approaches for diverse populations, and collaboration at the local, state, and national levels.
