Curriculum
Cytotechnology & Histotechnology, combined program in the Department of Clinical Laboratory Sciences within the College of Allied Health Sciences, leads to a Master’s degree. It was established at the UT Health Science Center at Memphis in 1951. The cytotechnology portion is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). The histotechnology portion will be accredited by the National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences (NAACLS).
Although the program is two calendar years in length, the curriculum is extremely intense and fast paced. Cytotechnology & Histotechnology students are in classes and laboratory sessions from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm, Monday through Friday. Clinical experience and didactic instruction are provided throughout the length of the program, with the greatest emphasis on microscopic interpretation of cellular specimens and interpretation of ancillary diagnostic techniques. Students are assigned to three off campus clinical experiences in the fall and spring semesters of their second year. Students are responsible for the costs associated with this clinical education, such as travel and living expenses.
