Why I chose UT-Jackson: During medical school, I spent 2 separate months there during clinical rotations. I was treated well by all the faculty, residents, and staff. I learned a lot, and I even had some fun! When it came time to choose somewhere to train for 3 years in family medicine, the choice was clear to me. It could only be Jackson.

Why I chose UT-Jackson: UT-Jackson was actually instrumental in my decision to go into family medicine. I rotated here during my third and fourth years and was extremely impressed with the friendly and supportive atmosphere. The faculty and residents were always willing to teach and facilitate learning, which I saw was further augmented by the high volume of medically complex patients. Overall, I knew it was a place where I would be given a good balance of independence and support with ample opportunity for learning.

Richard Hayward, MD

Hometown: New Orleans, LA
Undergraduate: University of New Orleans
Med school: St. George's School of Medicine
Stats: Married
Hobbies: Yoga, Running, Applied Tactical Chakra Burrowing and SCUBA Diving
What I did before med school: Everything I could.
Why I chose UT-Jackson:  I was initially attracted to Jackson by it's unopposed program which ran it's own in-house service in the setting of a large hospital. I also like the idea of an attached EM fellowship. During my interview everyone seemed friendly, but people were friendly at all of my interviews. However, the personalities I encountered at Jackson stood out from the rest and it felt like a good fit for me. Now that I am here, I am super happy with my choice. I've lucked up and fallen in with an extremely warm and bright group of people here at UT-Jackson.

Bethany Russell, MD

Hometown: Bruceton, TN
Undergraduate: University of Tennessee – Martin, TN
Medical School: University of Tennessee Health Science Center, Memphis, TN
Stats: Married
Hobbies: Reading(romance novels, comedies, and murder mysteries), playing with my puppy-Tilly Mae, playing tennis, cooking, and shopping!
What I did before Med School: I graduated from undergrad in December and started medical school the fall of that next year; so between times, I worked as an admissions clerk for both hospital outpatient/inpatient services and ER admissions near my hometown. In undergrad I worked as a biology lab tech(I made broths, agar plates, etc.).
Why I chose UT-Jackson: It was my perfect fit in all aspects! The residents and staff were all so welcoming and genuinely kind to me when I rotated here and on my interview day. I felt like I had known them most of my life as I could easily talk with any one of them about really just whatever topic came up, from tv shows to music to sports to shopping!  The size of Jackson is exactly what I was looking for because you can get the small town feel(which is what I grew up in) plus there are still a lot of fun things to do and experience here! Also I was able to witness firsthand the type of education and procedural experience the residents were getting. Let me tell you, you will not find a family residency program that will better prepare you for practicing in the real world! I can honestly say I made the right decision in choosing Jackson! Residency is tough no matter where you are, but having coworkers that can make you smile and laugh at the end of a long day makes your journey a million times better!

What I did before medical school: I went to Medical School right out of Undergrad but was doing research in biochemistry during my undergrad years.
Why I chose UT-Jackson: There is so much you see here and are able to do at this program. Being an unopposed program and having one of the biggest Emergency Departments in the state , there is numerous opportunities for procedures. One of the other things is that the program has a ER fellowship that I’m interested in . I’m also very close to my family back home.

Dustin Temple, MD

Undergraduate: Vanderbilt University - Nashville, TN
Medical School: University of Tennessee Health Science Center, Memphis, TN

What I did before medical school: worked my way through college and worked as a fluoroscopy tech in southern California
Why I chose UT-Jackson: I was lucky to do research with the UT Jackson program after my first year of medical school.  Before that I wasn’t sure what field of medicine I wanted to go into, but realized that training in Jackson would allow me to practice every part of medicine.  Later, I rotated here during my clinical years and knew that it was the only place for me.   As an unopposed program, I will get the training I need to be able to care for every patient.  Plus, Jackson reminds me of where I grew up and is a great place to live.
