What I did before medical school: I entered the military straight out of high school and served 7.5 years as a food service specialist, then decided to pursue a bachelor's degree at a full time status. While waiting to enter medical school, I worked at the Colorado Department of Corrections for two years.
Why I chose UT-Jackson: I chose UT-Jackson because it is my ideal program. Is is an unopposed community based program with university affiliation so I feel like I am being offered the best of both worlds. After interviewing with the program and meeting all of the wonderful people who work at UT-Jackson, it was very evident that I was right at home. I was looking for a nurturing and encouraging learning atmosphere rather than an intimidating and antagonizing one, I feel like the faculty and staff genuinely care about helping me become the best person and physician possible. UT-Jackson's location is an added bonus, I am a country girl so I liked the fact that the city offers country living with city advantages. I am only four hours from home so that means I am close enough to make a move if needed; but far enough that people must call prior to stopping by for a visit. I believe that my training here will equip me to practice medicine at any capacity in various settings, it will also afford me the opportunity to develop life long relationships with many great people.
