Medical students at the University of Tennessee College of Medicine who are interested in participating in the NIH Medical Student Research Fellowship Program are encouraged to begin the application process as soon as possible. The entire application process generally requires three to four weeks. In order to apply, students should:
1. Contact Syamal K. Bhattacharya, Ph.D., Executive Director of MSRF Program, Room B318, 956 Court Ave. (Tel: 901-448-5676 or Email: firstname.lastname@example.org) for an initial interview at which time students will receive detailed Application Guidelines. Student interests and background, potential research preceptors, and program requirements will be discussed. Students should complete the Biographical Information form and send it to the Program Office before the interview or it can be filled out during the initial interview.
2. Meet with potential faculty preceptors to discuss their respective research programs and possible student projects. Students generally meet with 2-3 possible preceptors in order to get a broader perspective on potential areas of interest. Preceptors must be UT College of Medicine faculty members, and they can only have one NIH MSRF Program student at a time.
3. Decide and mutually agree with one research preceptor to work together to develop a student research project. The medical student and faculty preceptor should work closely together during all stages of the application process.
4. Prepare a mini-proposal (4-5 pages) with the assistance of the selected preceptor. The student and preceptor will develop a proposal which is goal-oriented, achievable, and includes a hypothesis, literature review, and methodology. Your preceptor should provide assistance throughout the application process. Please see Application Guidelines for in-depth explanation of proposal format and forms to be included.
5. Submit the original application to Tara Bea , in A202 Coleman Building by the submission deadline of April 1 for participation during the following summer session. Student applicants are responsible for submitting their proposals and all supporting documents by the deadline. Incomplete applications will not be reviewed.
6. Be reminded that applications are reviewed as they are submitted (i.e. rolling admissions). Written comments are provided by 2-3 faculty members based on the (1) scientific merit of the proposal, (2) achievability of the project, (3) clarity and conciseness, (4) productivity of the mentor, and (5) satisfactory academic progress of the student. The review process takes about 3-4 weeks.
7. Receive a letter about the status of the application 3-4 weeks after you submit your application.
