R. Bruce Shack, MD

Dr. Bruce Shack was born in Vernon, Texas in 1947.  He grew up in Vernon, graduating from Vernon High School in 1965.  He then began his undergraduate education at Midwestern University in Wichita Falls Texas, graduating with a Bachelor of Science degree in 1969.  He then matriculated at the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston, graduating with an MD degree in the spring of 1973.  While a medical student he had the opportunity to spend almost a full year at St. Bartholomew’s Hospital in London, England under the egis of Dr. Truman Blocker, the then President of the medical branch.

After graduation, he began his post graduate surgical education at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville, Tennessee, completing his General Surgery residency in 1978.  He then completed a Plastic Surgery residency also at Vanderbilt, finishing that in 1980.  Dr. Shack was certified by the American Board of Surgery in 1979, and by the American Board of Plastic Surgery in 1981.  He also has a Certificate of Added Qualification for Surgery of the Hand from the American Board of Plastic Surgery that was awarded in 1993.

On completion of his residency training, Dr. Shack took a faculty position at the Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland as an Assistant Professor.  He also had a joint appointment at the University of Maryland as well.  Dr. Shack left Hopkins in 1982 to return to Vanderbilt as an Assistant Professor of Plastic Surgery.  He rose through the academic ranks, ascending to full Professor and Chair of the Department of Plastic Surgery beginning in 1996. 

Dr. Shack remained in that role as Plastic Surgery Chair until 2016 when he stepped down to assume his new Position as the Dean at the University of Tennessee College of Medicine Chattanooga. 

Dr. Shack has served as Vice President of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, President of the Nashville Surgical Society, President of the Southeastern Society of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeons, and President of the Southern Medical Association - as well as President of the Tennessee Society of Plastic Surgeons.

Dr. Shack and his wife Wanda Kaye have four children and 11 grandchildren.  They enjoy travel, and Dr. Shack has been an avid golfer and wing shooter for most of his life.
