Policy on Downsizing or Terminating the Training Program
If downsizing is required of the residency program because of institutional cutbacks or other unexpected funding issues, then extreme care must be exercised to protect the job security of the current residents. Cutbacks should receive the approval of the program director, departmental chairman, and GME dean. Cutbacks should be made preferably to unfilled positions and/or future match positions rather than to current filled positions. Residents must be notified immediately of any planned reduction.
If the training program is forced to terminate positions suddenly, every effort must be made by the program leadership to allow residents to complete their training within the program or to find alternative training positions for its housestaff in another ACGME accredited program.
